Sustainability Committee plans fall events, reports rising recycling tonnage
Sustainability Committee · Meeting of August 18, 2026
TYNGSBOROUGH — Sustainability Committee approves fall events and discusses rising recycling costs. Chair Diana Keohane reported that FY26 recycling tonnage rose 78 tons, or 9 percent, while trash increased 48 tons, or 2 percent, diverting an additional 11.5 tons from the waste stream. Recycling tipping fees have now exceeded trash disposal costs.
The committee confirmed fall events including Health Fair on September 19, Repair Cafe on October 24, and Zero Waste Day on November 7, with Keith Morse as Repair Cafe Captain and Carolyn Scafidi and Deborah Schneider as Zero Waste Day Co-Captains. Keohane will brief the Select Board on year-over-year tonnage comparisons and a fall MassDEP Working Group opportunity for towns renegotiating waste contracts.
