Fire Station Committee Adopts Listening Timeline, Approves Community Survey After Ballot Defeat

Fire Building Committee · Meeting of June 22, 2026

Tyngsborough's Fire Station Building Committee unanimously adopted a seven-week community listening plan and approved a public feedback survey after the town's $24.8 million fire station proposal was rejected at the June election, 53 percent to 47 percent, despite passing annual town meeting with 86 percent support. The committee voted to release the survey June 25 and to present findings at a joint Select Board meeting on August 10, with three listening sessions planned in varying formats and times to maximize resident access. With roughly $11,000 remaining from the $300,000 schematic design appropriation, Town Administrator Colin said the funds could support administrative and minor estimating work but would not cover a full redesign, which he put at a minimum of $15,000 for targeted scope reductions.

A mailing to all households was debated and set aside after one member called it "a colossal waste of money," with the committee settling on an online-first strategy using a QR code, the town email list of nearly 2,200 subscribers, and social media. Resident Billy Crawford of 83 Frost Road told the committee during public comment that the town's $54.5 million middle school debt and rising embedded municipal costs make additional tax obligations difficult to sell, and urged the committee to slow down and develop a cost-effective plan.
