The Tyngsborough Police Department announced that Officer Olivia King Stark and Communications Specialist Kimberly Desmarais helped a Dunstable family deliver a healthy baby boy in a car on Kendall Road.
On Saturday, Oct. 24, at 8:55 p.m., Desmarais answered a 911 call reporting that a woman was in labor and about to give birth in a car on Kendall Road near Cummings Road. She dispatched Tyngsborough police and fire to the scene and gave the caller emergency medical dispatch instructions to help the mother until crews arrived.
King Stark was the first emergency responder to reach the vehicle. She relieved the baby's father and began providing medical and emotional support to the mother. A short time later, the baby boy was delivered in the vehicle and began crying.
Tyngsborough firefighters arrived and took over medical care, and Tyngsborough and Westford fire personnel helped transport the mother and baby to Lowell General Hospital for evaluation.
Sgt. Nate Abdallah said in a statement that King Stark "remained calm, composed, and reassuring throughout the incident" and that her actions showed "exceptional compassion, professionalism, and composure during an unexpected emergency." He said Desmarais "demonstrated outstanding performance by effectively managing the 911 call, providing critical instructions, and coordinating emergency resources during a time-sensitive situation."
Chief Shaun Woods said in a statement, "Olivia and Kim put their training to use when this family needed them. I'm proud of how they handled the call, and I want to thank our police officers, communications staff and fire personnel from Tyngsborough and Westford for their work. We're glad the mother and baby received the care they needed, and we wish the family all the best."
